How do magic mushrooms work? Let’s get scientific! The mushrooms contain the tryptamine psilocybin. When ingested, our digestive acids convert it to psilocin which is the chemical that causes the psychotropic effects. Due to the similarity in physical shape to serotonin, psilocin is absorbed through serotonin receptors.
From there, we know there is an effect on our consciousness. It is still a mystery as to exactly how that effect takes place, or what if any is the meaning of tripping. Shamans have used mushrooms, like many psychoactive plants depending on local availability, to diagnose illness, find lost objects, retrieve lost souls, find prey, etc. They rely on the experience to gain some knowledge or understanding they otherwise could not access. It is crazy how often it works!
